The Sociopragmatics Symposium 2025: Perspectives on East Asian Sociopragmatics and Beyond (SpS2025) will serve as a platform for exploring the intricate relationship between language, culture, and social interaction. With a focus on East Asian contexts, particularly Japanese and English, the symposium aims to shed light on how sociopragmatic phenomena shape communication in diverse cultural and linguistic settings.

Bringing together leading scholars, educators, and early-career researchers, the symposium welcomes topics such as politeness, speech acts, conversational implicature, intercultural communication, and digital pragmatics. SpS2025 also invites scholars working on other languages and regions, as we aim to establish a global dialogue on sociopragmatic-specific research.

This symposium seeks to advance our understanding of how language functions in specific contexts, providing a friendly, supportive, and collegial opportunity for participants to share their research, collaborate with peers, and gain fresh perspectives on sociopragmatics.
